Father (Government) Knows Best
Some time ago I did a post on Chasing the Cancer in response to the new smoking by law hitting the Province of Ontario. The new by law seems to be working here, there have been very few people charged, in fact Sean Penn got off scott free during the Toronto Film Festival for smoking at a press conference. The foreseeable result of course are major layoffs in casinos, closing down of bingo halls and a fair number of restaurants and small bars closing up. Even the Legion halls are in trouble and it is sad to see elderly veterans huddling outside their hall having a smoke. These are the guys who fought the Nazi's on our behalf for Christ sake, can't we just let them end their lives happily. But no, McGuinty has decreed that they shall be healthy.
This column by the Star's Rosi DiMano speaks about Ontario's seniors living in care who live in care makes me very sad. That the government didn't think enough of these poor souls to figure something out for them drives me up the wall. There have been no charges mind you, most seniors don't break the law, but their lives, what's left of them, have been made more difficult by Poppa McGuinty.
There have been numerous ways government has taken over our lives, they banned pop machines in schools, are working at banning trans fats and the latest craze is to maybe ban teens from drinking coffee! Are they nuts? When will it end, when will we finally say, enough is enough? Probably never, we are a wimpy bunch, us Canadians.

I'm biased.
I wanted to clear that up right away.
Governments who legislate healthy lifestyles aren't that far removed from governments who legislate (and then enforce) healthy thinking, healthy reading, healthy religious observance (or lack thereof), healthy protesting (or lack thereof) and healthy confinement (or oppression) for those who disagree.
Me, I'd rather have the right to choose my lifestyle. Because right now they're telling me that smoking is bad, and I can accept that as truth. But what's next? Now that we have legion of people who earning their livelihood on ensuring that other people observe healthy practices, don't they need to find new things to vilify in order to maintain their comfortable existence?
Oh poop, I'm doing that thing where I base what I think someone will do on what there interest is to do. Best be off, then.
Ta!
